Steve Clarke bristles at Scotland question as Kilmarnock boss makes statement on his future

Bristling Steve Clarke batted away questions on the Scotland job as he remained coy on his next move.

The Kilmarnock boss has emerged as leading candidate to replace Alex McLeish after Derek McInnes ruled himself out of the running.

Clarke has scooped a hat-trick of managerial awards this term and - ahead of Sunday's visit of Rangers - stands on the brink of delivering European football to Rugby Park.

And, after picking up the Ladbrokes Premiership Manager of the Year gong, the 55-year-old insists his future will be decided in due course.

Clarke had already dodged Killie's Friday media briefing and resisted attempts to steer the interview towards the Hampden vacancy.

He told Ladbrokes : "The future will take care of itself.

"We concentrate on the weekend fixture, everyone's focused on this game and we want it to be a great occasion for Kilmarnock and the fans.

"We spoke before that this interview was about the season, we speak about the season. I think I've done that quite clearly and quite fairly.

"If I wanted to talk through what might happen in the future I would've done the press conference (on Friday).

"This is for another reason. This was for Ladbrokes, that's what I've done and I've done it quite fairly."

Clarke admitted earlier in the week his "head was like a tumble dryer" and assistant Alex Dyer, filling in on press duty, said an offer from Scotland would be difficult for the former West Brom boss to turn down.

Dyer said: "It's a pinnacle of anyone's career.

"If the country comes for him it would be a great honour. I know he knows that.

"He has done a great job here. He's always left it open that he will decide at the end of the season, that's no secret. At the end of the day, it is a hard one to turn down.

"We will just leave it up to the gaffer. What will be, will be."
