Steve Buscemi likes playing characters who are "a little broken".
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, he said: “I’ve always been drawn to people who are a little broken. That’s where the humanity is.”
From twitchy criminals (Reservoir Dogs) to haunted politicians (Boardwalk Empire), Buscemi has made a career out of playing the kind of characters you wouldn’t necessarily invite to dinner — but can’t stop watching.
He said: “I don’t mind if the character’s not likable.
“As long as there’s something real there — some vulnerability or contradiction — I’m in.”
He added: “I love watching people figure things out.
“Even when they’re falling apart.”
The 67-year-old actor's upcoming roles include Wild Horse Nine, a dark comedic drama from The Banshees of Inisherin filmmaker Martin McDonagh.
Buscemi - who has a minor role in season two of Netflix hit Wednesday - will feature in the movie alongside Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich and Parker Posey.
The Fargo actor will be taking on a role that was initially set to be played by Mark Ruffalo.
The flick is being filed in Rapa Nui – also known as Easter Island.
It is extremely rare that a production, let alone an American or British film, is shot on the island – which is one of the most remote inhabited places on Earth.
The location is one of the few areas that is not overrun by modern conveniences as it is run by the Rapa Nui National Park.
