Stereophonics gig at Manchester Arena will go ahead as planned tonight amid coronavirus outbreak

Stereophonics' gig at Manchester Arena will go ahead as planned tonight amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Arena bosses said they are following Government guidance and that the venue remains fully open, with the event taking place as usual.

The Welsh rockers will perform the massive gig at the arena on Friday (March 13) as part of their Kind 2020 tour.

Doors are set to open at 6.30pm.

Manchester Arena bosses said that as the COVID-19 situation evolves, the safety and wellbeing of visitors and staff members is their 'number one priority'.

They have urged fans to be assured that health, safety and cleanliness has their 'complete attention'.

In a statement on the website, they added: "The venue remains fully open and events are taking place as usual.

"Should this change, we will communicate details to visitors and ticket holders as soon as possible.

"The guidance from the Government to music fans attending music events in the UK and to anyone involved in tours in the UK is to check with the official Government news sources.

"We will continue to review our policies and procedures in line with updated health advice and guidance.

The government moved from the previous 'containment' phase to the 'delay' phase to help tackle COVID-19 on Thursday.

Measures such as closing schools and colleges, limiting social interactions and banning 'mass gatherings', in a bid to limit the spread of the virus, could have been implemented.

But after the emergency Cobra meeting, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told a press conference that while officials are still considering bringing in a ban on large gatherings, that this measure would not be implemented yet.

Mr Johnson said the government is keeping the measure 'up our sleeves'.

A number of music fans have questioned the arena's decision to remain open, with some saying that the Stereophonics gig going ahead is 'not wise'.

One fan commented: "So football is shut down, rugby, cricket, all sports, but let's stay open so thousands of people can get all hot and sweaty... clueless."

But others are pleased that the gig is going ahead as planned.

One fan said: "I am here for tonight's gig. I follow the advice given and I'm not panicking.

"It's my choice to go tonight and I'm happy to see they are going ahead with it, as they should.

"If you decide not to go then that's all good too."

Another commented: "We will be there tonight, pleased that the Phonics are still going ahead with the gig.

The Who recently announced they were postponing their UK tour because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The band were due to kick off the tour at Manchester Arena on Monday, March 16.

Avril Lavigne also cancelled her string of UK tour dates amig the ongoing pandemic.

She told fans she had to cancel because of Donald Trump's travel ban and large event restrictions in Europe.

As of 9am 13 March 2020, a total of 32,771 people have been tested for COVID-19 in the UK.

798 people tested positive.

10 patients who tested positive for coronavirus have sadly died.

The chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, said all four chief medical officers in the UK have agreed to raise the risk rating from coronavirus to high.

Anyone displaying basic symptoms of coronavirus - a new and persistent cough or a high temperature - should stay at home for seven days.
