Stephen Robinson says St Mirren are 'actively looking' for strikers after goalless Glentoran draw

Manager Stephen Robinson says St Mirren are “actively looking” for reinforcements up front.

The Buddies first pre-season friendly of the 2022/23 campaign ended in a goalless draw against Glentoran last night.

With Eamonn Brophy looking set to join Ross County and Curtis Main having already departed, the Saints are short of options up front.

Alex Greive led the line in Belfast last night, with a number of youngsters also getting an opportunity to impress.

Having been linked with a move for former Sunderland and Scotland star Steven Fletcher, Robinson admitted he’s on the hunt for extra firepower in the final third.

Robinson told St Mirren TV: “It looked like a pre-season game, with everyone still finding their legs.

“There were some good performances in there, with some looking sharper than others.

“People like Alex Greive, Keanu Baccus and Alex Gogic have all been playing games over the break. You can see the difference in their sharpness.

“We got through it with no injuries and 45 minutes in everybody’s legs. That’s the main thing.

“The two boys (Toyosi Olusanya and Caolan Boyd-Munce) have come back very strong in pre-season.

“They didn’t get a lot of game time last year and it’s important we give them every opportunity to impress.

“It was probably a flavour of what it will be like in the League Cup. We’ll dominate a lot of the ball and we have to be clever with it, create chances and take them. That’s something we need to improve on.

“We know we need more up the top end of the pitch - which we’re actively looking for at this moment in time.

“We have offers in for players that we’re waiting to see responses for.

“We know what we’re still missing and we know what we’re still trying to add to the squad.”

Robinson gave a special mention to the academy kids that have joined the senior side on the trip to Northern Ireland, adding: “The young boys have come away with us on this trip. I thought young Ethan (Sutherland) was excellent in the first half.

“Little Fraser (Taylor) was superb again and is getting better and better. Luke Kenny was the standout performer from all the young ones for me.

“It’s great to have a balance of experiences pros and younger players.”
