Stephen O'Donnell joins Motherwell - just weeks after training with Hamilton Accies

It's a signing that will be celebrated in one half of Lanarkshire and looked upon with envy in the other...

Scotland international Stephen O'Donnell has tonight joined Motherwell, just weeks after training with rivals Hamilton Accies.

The 28-year-old turned down a new deal with Kilmarnock during the close season, hoping to land a move down south.

Accies gaffer Brian Rice welcomed him to training last month to keep his fitness up - but now he's opted to join the Steelmen on a short-term deal, much to the fury of Accies fans on social media.

O’Donnell, who has signed a deal "until the next transfer window" but does have the option to extend the deal until the end of the season, told Motherwell's official website: “I’m delighted to sign a deal with Motherwell.

“It’s a deal that suits everyone involved. Obviously there’s a few injuries and so the manager was looking for someone.

“When he came to me, I was delighted to sign up.

“I am a local boy, so it’s a great fit for me. And obviously, the chance to have another crack at Europe was a big factor.

“I feel I’ve a lot to prove at that level and to get that chance is important, especially with Scotland games on the horizon too.

“But first, I want to get playing games and help the team.”
