Stephen Cluxton and Seamus Callanan named Players of the Year

Stephen Cluxton has been named as the PwC Footballer while Seamus Callanan has picked up the hurling equivalent.

It’s long-awaited for both players, who had been nominated four times between them prior to this year and have now finally won the players’ vote for the most prestigious individual awards in the GAA.

And after 19 seasons playing for Dublin and having captained them to the five-in-a-row in September, the Footballer of the Year award is the crowning glory for Cluxton.

By winning the award ahead of teammates Con O’Callaghan and Jack McCaffrey, as well as picking up a sixth All Star, Cluxton, 38 next month, relieves Offaly legend Martin Furlong of a number of records.

Furlong had been the oldest All Star football recipient (37 in 1983), the most senior winner of the Footballer of the Year (36 in 1982) and the last goalkeeper to be presented with that particular award (albeit the Texaco version) 37 years ago, though Cluxton now holds each of those distinctions.

The only other goalkeeper to win the Footballer of the Year was Billy Morgan in 1973.

Callanan, who had been nominated for Hurler of the Year for a record fourth time in September, saw off competition from Kilkenny’s TJ Reid and Patrick Horgan of Cork to become Tipperary’s first Hurler of the Year since Lar Corbett in 2010.

The Drom and Inch man had the unique achievement of hitting the net in each of Tipperary’s eight Championship games this year.
