Steph McGovern forced to apologise for brutal jibe at Boris Johnson's speech

BBC Breakfast's Steph McGovern has been forced to apologise to the prime minister after yesterday.

The pregnant presenter, who is now on maternity leave from the show, had taken a bombshell shot at Boris Johnson during yesterday's Convention of the North event in Rotherham.

During what became yet another nightmare day for the beleaguered PM, Steph called him out on a previously sexist remark he made about former prime minister David Cameron.

Moments after Mr Johnson left the stage, Steph said to the crowd: "I'd just like to point out I am a girly swot, and I'm proud of it!

"Let's see who's in the job for longest," she added to a chorus of laughter.

But after she came under fire for for remarks, Steph took to Twitter to apologise - and made it clear she wasn't speaking in her capacity as a BBC employee.

"At a non BBC event I was hosting today, I made a light hearted remark after the Prime Minister’s speech," she wrote.

"Sorry that this caused offence to some. That was absolutely not my intention."

But fans and celebrities flocked to offer the pregnant star support, with Pointless host Richard Osman tweeting: "It was a good line, delivered with charm, and I’m certain it was taken in that way. If you get in any trouble you can stand behind me."

Another follower wrote: "At a non BBC event you can say what you bloody well like. It was funny."

A third said: "Don't dum down Steph, just be aware that for a brief fleeting moment you were standing up as a fully formed woman and you spoke for all of us."

While a fourth told her: "Always was a fan. Adore you now Northern girly swots RULE."
