Steelers select OT Derwin Gray in the 7th round of the NFL draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up the 2019 NFL draft in a big way. And by big we mean by drafting Maryland offensive tackle Derwin Gray. Gray is a massive human at 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds with a long wingspan. Gray was the starting left tackle for Maryland last season but most pundits project him to move to the right side.

Gray is an active athlete and a solid pass protector. His run blocking is still a work in progress which means he isn’t currently a good prospect to kick inside to guard despite his size. The Steelers have never shied away from bigger players at right tackle with Marcus Gilbert as recent proof of that.

Pittsburgh is pretty well stocked at offensive line as of now, so Gray could be a good candidate for the practice squad while he polishes his technique as a run blocker and play recognition.
