One of the biggest surprises in 2018 was the outstanding play of offensive tackle Matt Feiler. The Pittsburgh Steelers got 10 quality starts out of Feiler in 2018 in place of Marcus Gilbert. Feiler’s play had to have contributed to the Steelers’ willingness to trade Gilbert to the Arizona Cardinals this offseason.
Now the Steelers have placed the ERFA tender on Feiler to assure he’s on the roster in 2019. But don’t be surprised if, like cornerback Mike Hilton, Feiler doesn’t try to work out a full contract with Pittsburgh as opposed to just playing one year on the tag. Feiler earned $555,000 in 2018 and $465,000 in 2017.
As well as Feiler played, it isn’t a given he will be the starting right tackle this season. The Steelers drafted Chuks Okorafor in the third round in 2018 and he played well in a limited role also. It should be a nice competition in training camp and the preseason for the spot.
