Steelers HC Mike Tomlin hints at position changes for Pittsburgh DBs

One position the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t address during the 2019 NFL draft was safety. Or did they? During one of Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin’s many post-pick press conferences he was asked about the lack of depth at safety but Tomlin wasn’t concerned.

He hinted guys like cornerbacks Cam Sutton, Mike Hilton and even Brian Allen could get a run at moving to safety this season.

When it comes to Sutton, this is nothing new. The Steelers have hinted at this change before. But honestly, you have to think, with all the problems the Steelers had with safety depth last year if Sutton was going to get a look, that would have been the time.

Nevertheless, all isn’t lost at safety. Marcus Allen is presumably healthy and could crack the 53-man roster. He’s a liability in coverage but was known as a big hitter in college.

Pittsburgh also signed Dravon Askew-Henry from West Virginia as a UDFA. He is similar in play style to Allen and might be the one UDFA from this group to have a rookie impact.

Also, let’s not rule out a late veteran addition. There are going to be some solid veteran safeties who become cap casualties and Pittsburgh could get a guy who can contribute on the cheap.
