Steelers ‘fit the mold’ of what QB Russell Wilson is looking for

Russell Wilson met with two teams prior to today’s legal tampering period, the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wilson, 35, is on the downswing of his 12-year career and, like any player in his position, wants another Super Bowl ring.

Although a trip to the big show is never promised — not even to the Kansas City Chiefs — he certainly wasn’t going to get there with the Giants. And while the Steelers seem to be more than just a Russell Wilson away from New Orleans, the opportunity is there.

For Wilson, it’s not just about the chance to win but also about going to a team with a consistent history of winning.

“I’m told Wilson is eager to help his new team on the contract front and enters the free agency process looking not only for the chance to win but also a team with an infrastructure for winning and has done it consistently,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote before news of Wilson’s plan to sign happened late Sunday night. “Pittsburgh fits that mold. Let’s see how this shakes out, but the Steelers appear well-positioned.”

Even though Pittsburgh hasn’t been the same since Ben Roethlisberger retired, it’s always been in the contender conversation. Wilson’s coming in is an upgrade for both sides.
