Steal Their Style: Best place for vintage shopping revealed as Mancs prepare for warmer days

Taking a quick walk around Manchester’s Northern Quarter for this week's Steal Their Style, you could tell everyone was getting ready to embrace sunnier days, with winter coats being swapped out for short sleeve tops - and every second person with a pair of sunglasses on their head.

Relaxed looks seem to be the trend around town, with loose fitted clothes and comfort being priorities, without neglecting taste.

What is encouraging to see is the surge in people ditching fast-fashion and venturing down the path of sustainability in fashion, buying full outfits from vintage and charity shops or pre-loved clothes online.

I spoke to one person who revealed where to find the best vintage clothes in Manchester and another who says Doc Martens are a wardrobe essential.

George Lawson

It comes as no surprise that George Lawson was off to film a shoot the day I stopped him, because he was definitely camera ready.

The artist, originally from Lancaster, gave the vibe that his look was just “thrown together” however the singer revealed much thought went into each aspect of his outfit.

“Today, I’m wearing a leather boxy jacket which is actually from Collusion. I was wondering what I could style the jacket with, and thought it needed something contrasting, so I paired it with some flared brown trousers to go with the green.

“I needed to make it look a bit cooler so I popped on a brown tie to match the flares and a sexy little yellow vintage shirt on to finish it off.

“I’m also wearing some Doc loafers and a pair of Ray Ban shades because it’s finally sunny in Manchester.”

Fleur

Fleur is a big fan of Docs (MEN)

Fleur, originally from London but living in Manchester, doesn’t really remember where she got her trendy, long sleeve crop top, but reckons she got it from an independent brand on ASOS.

However, she does remember where she snatched her stylish full length jacket, which she got in a London vintage shop.

Also sporting a pair of Docs, Fleur says - “You can’t go wrong with a Doc.”

Marek

Marek opted for a streetwear, casual outfit (MEN)

For couple Marek and Kaan, it’s not the first time the pair had been stopped for their laidback, stylish look that day.

Marek laughed: “It’s always when you put the least amount of effort into your outfit people will give you compliments - not when you spend ages picking one out!”

The pair were head to toe in vintage and charity shop finds. Marek, who is originally from Slovakia, was wearing a vintage Nike cap and a pair of sunnies as he basked in the sunny Manc weather.

Funnily enough, Marek’s partner Kaan was wearing all of Marek’s clothes - including a Balenciaga jacket.

Kaan

Kaan told his favourite place in Manchester to go vintage hunting (MEN)

While Kaan, who is originally from north Wales and has been living in Manchester for the past four years, is wearing big name brand Balenciaga, Kaan says all their clothes are sustainable finds.

“I’m a little bit sustainable, mostly I’m into charity shop finds. I’ve had these Docs that were gifted to me for the past 6 years.

“Most of my clothes are either gifted to me or I just take from his (Marek's) wardrobe, truthfully. That’s the nicest thing about having a partner.

“This [bag] is Stella McCartney which we found for £10, we’re really lucky at what we find in charity shops,”

Kaan reckons the best place to go in Manchester for vintage clothes is Chorlton.

“Go to Chorlton high street and you will find some amazing things in their charity shops," he said.
