Statement issued over heavy police presence and cordon near Nottingham tram stop

Onlookers said they had 'never seen anything like it before' as police descended on a Nottingham street amid reports of a suspected cannabis farm.

Firefighters and ambulance vehicles were also called to Noel Street, opposite The Forest tram stop, as a cordon blocked traffic and trams from entering the area on Friday morning, August 6.

At least 12 police cars were spotted in the area and Nottinghamshire Police's drone team responded to the incident alongside police dogs.

Passers-by and residents voiced their shock at the incident.

Nabil Kayali, 38, told Nottinghamshire Live: "It’s very strange. It’s a residential area and it’s so unexpected. It’s the heart of Nottingham and full of people.

"I’ve never seen anything like this before."

Nick Baker, 50, added: "I was going to city centre on the tram but had to get off as it’s cordoned off.

"This area is one of the roughest in Nottingham so it doesn’t surprise me."

The cordon covered a large area from the junction with Gregory Boulevard and incorporated the Forest NET tram stop. Police were first spotted at around 10am and the cordon was lifted shortly before 11.30am.

NET confirmed no services were running between Wilkinson Street and Nottingham Railway Station, but NCT yellow services were accepting tram tickets.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live about the incident, a police spokesman said: "We are investigating a report of a cannabis grow in Noel Street.

"A number of police officers are in attendance and are likely to remain at the scene for some time.

"We take all reports of drugs seriously and we will always act when we receive intelligence.

"If anyone has concerns about drug production in their neighbourhood please call 101."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is also in attendance to assist police officers.

A spokesman added: "We are helping the police with an incident.

"They asked us to attend at 09.50am."

The fire service confirmed it had an aerial ladder platform and a pump in attendance from London Road.
