According to Multistate, as of July 2, nine states are still in legislative session, with two in special session. Massachusetts’s session is expected to end on July 31. California and North Carolina’s sessions will end on Aug. 31. Pennsylvania’s session will end on Nov. 30. Three states, Michigan, New Jersey, and Ohio, have sessions that end on Dec. 31. Alaska’s special session began on May 21. South Carolina’s special session began on May 15.
State governments across the country hold legislative sessions where a state's elected representatives meet to draft and vote on legislation and set state policies on issues such as taxation, education, and government spending. Forty-six state legislatures hold regular sessions annually. The other four states—Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, and Texas—meet in odd-numbered years.
