Stars align to sign Englishman Moores as next BBL coach

The Melbourne Stars will put their faith in former England coach Peter Moores to break their Big Bash League drought, after signing the mentor on a two-season deal.

Moores will take over from David Hussey, who left his role at the Stars at the end of last season to take up the role of head of male cricket in Victoria.

An experienced mentor, Moores coached England between 2007 and 2009, before a second stint in charge in 2014 and 2015.

He will continue to act as head coach at Nottinghamshire during the English summer, while taking on the Stars role during Australian seasons.

"It's a great honour to be appointed as the Melbourne Stars head coach for the next two seasons," Moores said in a statement.

"I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to work with some of the best players in the world, but also to help develop the rest of the squad to get this club back where they belong.

"I have loved watching the Big Bash from afar and I cannot wait to be a part of the competition and get to work with the squad."

Moores' job will not come easy. The Stars finished at the bottom of the table last season and have not reached the playoffs since their grand final capitulation in 2019/20.

They also remain one of only two clubs to have not won a title, alongside the Hobart Hurricanes.

Changes already loom at the club, with star legspinner Adam Zampa expected to move to the Melbourne Renegades when the league's contracting window opens.

"Peter was the outstanding candidate from a very strong group of applicants and I'd like to thank all of them for their time," Stars' general manager Blair Couch said.

"Peter has built a very strong resume over a long period of time both at domestic and international level and we look forward to him sharing all of that knowledge and experience with our group.

"We are well aware of the challenge ahead of us. Rest assured the entire club is working as hard as we can to rise back up the BBL ladder, and Peter is the best man to lead this group."
