Stark Edinburgh pictures show major repair operation after end of Christmas Market

The Edinburgh Christmas Markets run by Underbelly packed up and left a couple of weeks ago - but the large city centre gardens are still covered with traces of the festive attractions.

The popular attraction comes to the capital each year, bringing with it thousands of visitors over the busy Christmas period. The markets, ice rink and fairground rides start in early November and remained open until January 5.

The markets are located across the mound next to the National Galleries of Scotland, the Big Wheel, Merry-Go-Round and other rides are dotted around the city park next to the Scott Monument.

Once the attractions are taken down the clean up operation begins.

The turf where the Forth One Big Wheel, Merry-Go-Round, bars and food stalls stood remains a mess.

The top path in Princes Street Gardens is currently still closed and used to store cones and fences.

Near the entrance to the Christmas Markets where the signs were stuck into the mud have ripped out several cobbles from the ground.

A set of Christmas lights have been left tangled and strewn across the pavement on Princess Street.

You can see exactly where the large fairground rides were placed next to the Scott Monument due to the marks left.
