Stale Tottenham need Antonio Conte to transform Harry Kane like he did Romelu Lukaku

Daniel Levy is like a gambler searching for his next adrenaline-fuelled hit.

Out with Nuno Espirito Santos - who never stood a chance after what Jose Mourinho left behind.

In, potentially, with Antonio Conte.

As the club motto says: To dare is to do.

They are a club gone stale, with the remnants of a side that got to the Champions League final, and living on that past glory.

Incredibly, Spurs spent 72 days trying to appoint a successor to Jose Mourinho, only to sack him 124 days later.

He had 17 games in charge, and lost half of his Premier League matches. Only Norwich have scored fewer league goals.

Nuno was always a dead man walking - poor results, a functional style, well down on Spurs’ wanted list. He should have taken a rest after leaving Wolves.

Where was the style, where was the flair? Where was the warmth? He went against all that Spurs believe to be their tradition.

It’s little wonder that the Spurs fans turned their noses up at “the bloke from Wolves", and were in open revolt at Nuno’s decision making, as they were thrashed by Man U on Saturday night.

Nuno has respect in my part of the world because he took Wolves up and they took points off top clubs.

The London-type fan wanted top tier elite.

Will Antonio Conte be a good manager for Tottenham? Have your say here

The real problem was inheriting what Mourinho left behind - dispirited players, disjointed squad, overloaded with grafters and grinder rather than front-foot excitement.

Spurs have acted now before they drop to a position where they can’t get a Conte.

Someone had to go and it wasn’t going to be Daniel Levy, who has stood by Fabio Paratici the director of football, despite the debacle over Nuno’s appointment.

Moving for Conte makes sense, as does an 18 month contract. Success would be getting into some form of European competition next season, getting a tune out of Harry Kane, and then he could walk into one of the premium jobs against Bayern, Man City, Man United.

At Inter, Conte has had a significant role in transforming Romelu Lukaku, got him holding the ball up, slimming him down and coaching him.

Harry Kane looks out on his feet at the moment, and the priority is to get him firing again.

He needs to work with Kane. At Inter he had a coach shoving Lukaku in the back telling him what to do to be better, how to receive the ball and worked on weaknesses.

A top manager who had won Serie A saying to Harry: get your head down, work with me, spark up, and score goals and I will drive you myself to the Eithad next summer.

Spurs are feeling sorry for themselves and they need someone to react off.

The question for Conte, if they get him, is how many in the dressing room is he going to p*** off and how many will he get following him. He can go in and say ”this worked at Inter Milan,” and players will listen to that.

Did Tottenham make the right call to sack Nuno? Vote below

He can’t just go in smashing the club up. He has to work with other people, not be a dictator. He will have to show a bit of contrition, but it will be fun to see him turning the club round to be more proactive and aggressive.

What is success for Spurs? Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea are a locked in top 3. Then there is Arsenal, Man U, West Ham, Leicester.

It would be difficult to be top four, but fifth, Kane scoring, clear of Arsenal, developing players, and Levy and Conte will be happy.

Below Arsenal and West Ham and constantly falling out with players and the trigger will be pulled again!

Nuno doesn’t leave discredited. He will become the new Steve Bruce or Sam Allardyce - pick the phone up to him in November, December and keep a club in the Premier League.
