A teenage boy reportedly knocked on doors looking for help after being stabbed multiples times.
The 18-year-old was attacked on Beaconsfield Road, in Seaforth, at around 8.30pm on Thursday.
He had been knifed in the head, leg and back and left bleeding in the street before he was found and rushed to hospital.
A police cordon was quickly put in place at the scene, close to the junction on Rawson Road, as police launched an investigation.
People living in the area contacted the ECHO to say that the boy had been assaulted and that he tried to find help.
One neighbour said: "A teenager was stabbed on the corner of Rawson Road and Beaconsfield Road in Seaforth.
"The police are there now and cordoned the road off.
"He knocked at people’s houses on Beaconsfield Road for help."
Forensic officers were seen working inside the cordon through the night as witnessed were asked to come forward.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are investigating following reports an 18 year-old male was assaulted in the Seaforth area tonight, Thursday 19th November.
"We were contacted at 8.35pm to reports the teenager was assaulted in Beaconsfield Road and suffered injuries to his head, leg and back consistent with a bladed weapon being used.
"He has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
"An investigation is underway and CCTV and house-to-house enquiries are being carried out in the local area."
Chief Inspector Derek Riley said: “The investigation into the circumstances of what took place are in the very early stages.
"I would appeal for anyone who was in the area of Beaconsfield Road this evening who saw anyone or anything suspicious to contact us.

"I would also ask for any drivers to check their dash cam in case they captured anything significant.”
