St. Philomena’s College convocation held

The 7 th convocation of St. Philomena’s College, an autonomous institute affiliated to the University of Mysore, was held here on Saturday in which 399 graduates and 189 postgraduates received their degree certificates on completion of their respective courses.

There were 11 gold medalists among the postgraduates and 49 gold medalists among the graduates and C.N. Manjunath, Director, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, delivered the convocation address.

He said one of the major problems of the society was lack of confidence and increase in mental stress among the young people and attributed it to modern lifestyle.

Dr.Manjunath said people in the age group of 17-40 years are at a high risk of developing blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, cancer etc and pointed out that in the past, children used to bring their parents to hospitals but it was the other way round in the present times with parents taking their children to hospitals. He said physical activity was the key for good health besides avoiding junk food.

Pointing out that the destiny and future of the nation is shaped in classrooms, Dr.Manjunath said empathy, education, energy and environment were essential for the growth of the nation and topped it with entrepreneurship. He said in the competitive world the youth will feel stressed but stress was nothing but difference between expectation and performance.

He said digital technology and social media has revolutionised the dissemination of knowledge and thoughts but cautioned that it was also a double-edged sword. Though these are days of 3Gs and 4Gs, the first G is Guru and the 4 th G was Google in the present times.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore G. Hemantha Kumar, Bishop of Mysuru Rev.K.A.Williams, and staff of St. Philomena’s College were present.
