St Mirren Women heading for pre-season in Germany to inspire promotion bid

Kate Cooper believes the next goal is a push for promotion as St Mirren Women gear up for a quick return for pre-season.

The Buddies will be heading to Germany to get match fit as they look to make the most of the summer preparations – with much of the squad returning at the beginning of next month.

Saints broke into the top half of League One last season after an impressive turnaround from the 2021/22 season when they finished third bottom.

Now head coach Cooper is aiming to climb even higher with a message of more consistency to help the team achieve its goal of going up.

Speaking to the Paisley Daily Express, she said: “Most of the players will be returning in July but others will be coming back for individual training towards the end of June. Having retained the core of our squad is crucial and that will be huge for us as we aim to push them next season.

“We were third bottom before, aimed for top six last season and got that so now we are aiming for promotion.

“To achieve that, though, we need players to be consistent every week with their performances and we are aiming for that.

“We will be bringing in some fresh players, around a maximum of five, to push those players we have as that will up the levels of the squad.”

Cooper wants to ensure she has the squad ready for the rigours of a demanding campaign after injuries and other commitments meant getting a full matchday 18 every week was difficult.

And to set them up for the season, the players will be putting in the hard yards during a 10-day training camp in Germany.

“It is going to be a long season for us as it will run from August until May/June,” Cooper said.

“But to get us prepared for the season, we will be going to Germany for a 10-day training camp that will see us compete in two 11-a-side tournaments and a seven a-side-tournament.

“It is good for us to be taking part in these events as it really does show the work and progress that we have made on and off the park in the game.

“So, when we return from Germany, it will be a case of the season starting the week we get back or the following one.”
