St Mirren's coronavirus hardline stance as stewards ordered to be on lookout for symptoms

St Mirren have briefed their stewards to be on red alert for fans with coronavirus symptoms for Wednesday night's game against Hearts in Paisley.

The club are taking no chances despite no confirmed cases of the virus, known medically as Covid-19, in the Renfrewshire area so far.

And supporters of either side will be BANNED from attending if they show "cold or flu-like symptoms".

There are currently seven confirmed cases in the Lothians as Hearts make the trip from Edinburgh for the relegation-six pointer.

A St Mirren club statement read: "We would respectfully ask that anyone who has any cold or flu like symptoms does not attend the game this evening.

"While there is every likelihood that you will just have the cold or flu it is imperative that we protect the health and wellbeing of all these who attend the game and we cannot take any risks.

"Our stewards will be briefed accordingly and anyone with cold or flu like symptoms will not be admitted.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused."

Tonight's clash has been re-arranged from the rained-off fixture that was due to be played Friday 21 February.

The original game was due to be broadcast live on BT Sport but that will no longer be possible with the Champions League returning to our screens.

A win for Hearts will lift them off the bottom ahead of St Mirren on goals scored while a home victory will leave the Gorgie side six points adrift at the foot of the Scottish Premiership .

Coronavirus has already had an impact on Scottish football, with Rangers forced to play their Europa League second leg at Bayer Leverkusen behind closed doors.
