St Cuthbert Wanderers are hoping a change of fixtures will pay dividends this weekend.
With their South of Scotland Challenge Cup clash with Queen of the South brought forward to Tuesday night, they had been facing a blank weekend before a crucial top of the table clash at Threave Rovers.
But some swift work means they’ll now face bottom club Wigtown and Bladnoch on Saturday.
Boss Jordan Williamson said: “In terms of getting back to league business we wanted to make sure we managed to get a game under our belts before the derby at the end of the month.
“When the league presented us with this opportunity we took it to make sure we get ourselves back into the swing of things and kick-start 2022.
“It’s going to be an awkward fixture, it always is when you play against teams that are struggling. On Saturday, Threave were held to 1-0 at half-time and by all accounts Wigtown were stuffy and hard to break down.
“We know that is going to be the case for us this weekend. They’ve improved since the start of the season, their results have shown that.
“The deficits aren’t as big as they once were so we know we’re going to have to be on song if it’s to be as comfortable as people maybe expect. We know we have to turn up and do the right things for that to be the case.”
Saints had no competitive game last week, the clash with Mid Annandale being postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Lockerbie side’s camp. The players enjoyed an inter-squad bounce game instead.
Tuesday’s Challenge Cup saw Saints suffer a heavy 6-1 defeat to a Queen of the South side which featured a number of first team regulars.
Ally Roy scored twice early on to seemingly put the home side in control before Ross Hunter got one back for the South of Scotland League leaders.
Soares Junior scored twice more after the break to complete the rout, Saints’ miserable night being summed up by a red card for Hunter.
