Spurs news: Pochettino's big Ndombele decision, Alli advice, ex-Liverpool man speaks out on duo

Tottenham may be seeing some of their Premier League rivals in action this midweek, but there is no game for Spurs.

The Lilywhites' early exit from the Carabao Cup, following defeat on penalties against League Two side Colchester United, has left Mauricio Pochettino's men without a game this midwee.

That does have its benefits though, with Spurs' opponents this weekend, Everton, involved in Carabao Cup action last night (Tuesday), while Tottenham have had more time to prepare for Sunday's game at Goodison Park.

Ahead of the trip to Merseyside this weekend, we take a look at the latest Spurs news, below.

Pochettino's Ndombele decision

There was a big surprise for Tottenham fans on Sunday when the teams were announced, with Tanguy Ndombele named on the bench.

The Frenchman was among the substitutes for the game, but did impress when he was introduced in the second half as he tried to get the team moving forward..

But getting Ndombele back in the team for the trip to face Everton is one of the key things for Pochettino this week.

Pochettino will need to decide who misses out in midfield though, or whether he goes with Ndombele, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko as he has done a few times already this term.

What else is on Pochettino's to-do list this week? We explore here.

Paul Merson's advice for Dele Alli

It has not been the best of seasons for Spurs - and for Dele Alli.

The Tottenham star has had a disappointing start to the campaign, with Alli only playing seven times for Mauricio Pochettino's men, scoring just one goal against Watford.

And former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has said he feels the Spurs man needs to get back to the "Dele Alli of old".

“I've said it for a long time, Dele Alli has to get back to the old Dele Alli and he was one of the best young attacking midfield prospects in Europe,” the former Arsenal and Aston Villa told Sky Sports.

“He got in the box, made runs and he could score a goal. He was probably the nearest thing to Frank Lampard at one stage.

"If you're a midfielder, no one likes chasing another midfielder when they haven't got the ball and they get in the box and score a goal.

“That's what he's stopped doing. He might be thinking that when Moussa Sissoko has got the ball, is it worth me running? And that's a problem."

Merson is not the only person to comment on Alli's form though, with his former manager at MK Dons, Karl Robinson, also giving his thoughts on the Spurs star.

Spurs duo defended

Tottenham defenders Serge Aurier and Danny Rose have come in for some criticism this season.

The duo have both been criticised by pundits on occasion, and former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane was scathing in his verdict of the pair following the defeat at Liverpool, in which Aurier conceded a penalty.

"The two Tottenham full-backs were dreadful. Dumb and Dumber, I'd call them," the former Republic of Ireland international said.

"I thought they were really poor. You can't compare them to Liverpool, the two lads who are absolutely fantastic."

But former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore was left less than impressed with Keane's comments and has jumped to the defence of the duo, claiming that the former United man was "completely wrong".

"I like and respect Roy Keane but I thought he was completely wrong when he laid into Tottenham’s full-backs after their defeat by Liverpool," the former England international wrote in the Mirror .

"Spurs played well and if Heung-min Son’s effort had gone in rather than hitting the bar it would have been 2-0 and Liverpool wouldn’t have been winning because it would have been too much of a mountain to climb."
