Spurs fail in appeal over Son Heung-min's red card against Chelsea

Tottenham have failed with their appeal against the red card Son Heung-min received in Sunday's defeat against Chelsea.

The 27-year-old was given his marching orders in the 62nd minute after kicking out at Antonio Rudiger.

Referee Anthony Taylor had initially awarded a free-kick to Spurs before the decision was overturned by VAR.

With the player set to miss the festive games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich City and Southampton, the Lilywhites decided to appeal the decision in hope of getting it overturned.

However, that has not happened and the player will now miss the next three games before returning for the FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough on Sunday, January 5.

Speaking at his press conference on Monday ahead of the Boxing Day game at home to Brighton, Mourinho claimed that his player would be "punished five times" if their appeal wasn't successful.

"That’s exactly the point about the VAR. The VAR is for me and Frank Lampard to say yes. So the penalty is for me and Frank Lampard to say yes, a penalty," he told reporters when speaking about the red card.

"With Son, Lampard says yes, I say no, you say you don't know.  Even in this room some of our friends will say yes and some will say no.

"Mr Paul Tierney decides yes and Mr Anthony Taylor who was in the game, in real time, five metres from the situation, Mr Taylor decided no.

"So who was refereeing the game. Not Mr Taylor. It was Mr Tierney.

"I think not a red card, VAR was to support football, to bring true football, to bring true to the spectacle and they did that with the penalty decision and they killed the game with Son's decision.

"I hope Son is not punished five times. One time was the foul that Rudiger did on him. The second is to be sent off. The third would be not to play against Brighton. The fourth not to play against Norwich and the fifth not to play against Southampton.

"So I hope to be punished twice is enough, he doesn't deserve for the third the fourth or the fifth."
