Springfield Park play area 'set on fire' in act of 'mindless vandalism'

A fire started this evening at the play area in Mangotsfield's Springfield Park.

Councillor Ian Boulton, for neighbouring Staple Hill, has condemned the incident as "mindless vandalism".

Trefor Southwell, who lives nearby, said the fire started at around 6.20pm today (April 30).

He said: "We saw smoke from the window and my wife called the fire brigade, who had already been called.

"She went around to the park to show them the entrance and they put it out.

"We didn’t really look much at the damage but I think it’s mainly the flooring and some of the rubber toadstools.

"Fingers crossed the metal equipment is okay.

"That flooring is expensive, however. My wife helped raise money for the park around eight to 10 years back, along with councillor Michael Bell."

The play area, which cost more than £80,000, was also targeted by arsonists in May 2014.

A mum who lives by the park said: "My kids were so sad to hear about this.

"The swings were burnt out a couple of years ago, the tunnel was burnt out last year and the fence has been ripped down."

"We are completely devastated about this."

Mr Boulton said today's fire was "so frustrating to see" in a Facebook post.

Bristol Live has approached Avon Fire and Rescue Service for more details on the incident.
