Spice Girls top the charts - for most popular bedroom posters

The Spice Girls have stormed back to the top of the charts after being voted the most popular bedroom poster Brits had on their walls as teens, according to a survey.

One fifth (19%) of Brits quizzed revealed Posh, Scary, Sporty, Ginger and Baby graced their childhood bedroom walls, while Take That nipped at their heels and claimed second place with 14%.

The 90s Brit girl and boy bands snatched the top two spots to place above their rivals from across the pond - with US boyband The Backstreet Boys earning 13%, Michael Jackson (12%), Nirvana (11%) and Britney Spears (10%).

Even The Beatles could only muster 11%.

The survey of 1,265 Brits by online printing company instantprint showed that more than half (53%) of respondents said they had posters of pop stars or bands up on their walls when they were teenagers.

Meanwhile, the research revealed that one fifth (20%) had film posters, while 17% had general celebrities from the time gazing down at them.

Lads' mags pin-ups also proved popular, with almost one in ten (9%) admitting to having FHM babes on their walls, while 6% revealing they had a Baywatch poster.

Of those quizzed, five percent admitted to having actress and model Farah Fawcett grace their childhood bedrooms, 4% had Che Guevara while 3% had the iconic Live Aid poster.

Girls appeared to outgrow their poster phase earlier with females taking their posters down at 15, on average, while males were 16.

There was also a generational difference, with Millennials taking theirs down at the age of 14 compared to Boomers who removed their posters at 18 years old.

Jon Constantine-Smith, head of instantprint, said: “It’s great to see the girls have still got it and hold the title of the most popular wall poster, even after all these years.

“As a printing company it is important for us to keep an eye on what is popular and how trends change.

“It’s interesting to see that Brits appear to be ditching their posters at a younger age.

"As a printing company we have noticed a spike in people turning to our services to have their own designs created.

“This ranges from pictures of loved ones to bands, groups and celebrities that maybe aren’t popular enough to be mass sold in stores.

"We know that displaying individualism and showing unique differences is key for consumers and we believe allowing people to create their own designs is reviving the poster trend.”

The research also found other popular poster trends were TV stars (16%), cars/sports trends (14%), superheroes (12%) and cartoons (11%).

The most popular film poster was Jurassic Park, which scooped 9% of the vote, E.T. came second (7%) and Pulp Fiction came third with 6%.
