Falkirk manager John McGlynn admitted Ayr looked the hungrier team after his side suffered a Premier Sports Cup upset.
Kevin Holt’s 30th-minute header proved enough for Gary Naysmith’s men to take control of Group G with a 1-0 win at Falkirk, who missed a late penalty through Ross MacIver.
McGlynn told Falkirk TV: “First half, I thought we were too slow in our build-up, too methodical, easy to deal with, never really caused them enough problems.
“We had to change things at half-time and just be a little bit more direct and ask them to defend a little bit more.
“I felt we got a lot of good balls in the second half. We need to get on the end of them. We’ve got to have a desire to get on the end of these crosses.

“We’ve had five corners, I don’t think we’ve won a header at any of these corner kicks. In both boxes, we didn’t do well enough. We’ve lost a goal from a set-play.
“I thought that, unfortunately, on the night, they looked like they actually wanted it more than us and that’s disappointing.”
The Bairns still have Alloa and Stranraer to play but Ayr are now strong favourites to top the group.
“All we can do is try and win our next two games and I don’t know if nine points will get you through,” McGlynn said. “More often than not, it doesn’t.
“There might be a hiccup somewhere along the lines that might help us. We’re now looking for favours.”
