Spencer Matthews 'planning documentary' about brother who tragically died on Everest

Spencer Matthews is reportedly planning to make a documentary about his brother, who tragically died on Mount Everest.

Michael Matthews was just 22 when he fell to his death when descending from the summit of the mountain in 1999.

Spencer, 33, is now said to be keen to retrace his sibling's final steps in a documentary, which is being backed by his brother James, 46, and his wife Pippa Middleton, 38, according to reports.

Michael, who was the youngest Brit to conquer Everest, reached the mountain's summit before becoming separated from his group during his descent.

Tragically for his family, Michael's body was never recovered, although local guides are said to have an idea as to where the mountaineer's remains may be.

“Spencer’s documentary about Michael and his final days is at the very early stages and Disney+ have shown an interest", a source told The Sun.

“Though the Matthews family were never able to recover Michael’s body, there is a guide who believes they know his final resting place.

“It’s a very tough film to make, but Spencer has the backing of his parents David and Jane, as well as James and Pippa."

The Mirror has contacted Spencer's reps for comment.

Spencer, who has two kids with his wife Vogue Williams, 36, wrote about Michael in his autobiography, Confessions of a Chelsea Boy.

He wrote: “His loss was devastating for the family and over time this became worse because the circumstances surrounding Michael’s death have never been fully explained.

"James took the news badly. With just a year and a half between them, he and Mike were the closest of friends.

“We have not been able to say goodbye in person.

“He lives on with us in our minds only. On Mike’s birthday James and I send Mum and Dad red roses for the age he would have been — I guess our family’s way of dealing with losing Mike is to believe that he goes on with us.

“It’s just that he’s in another place.”

Spencer and his family launched The Michael Matthews Foundation, which was created in the mountaineer's memory to support education projects in Africa and Asia.

Before Pippa married into the Spencer family, she and her brother James reached the 14,000ft summit of the Matterhorn mountain in the Swiss Alps to raise money for the charity in 2016.

Pippa said at the time: “It was humbling to have been able to climb one of the world’s most beautiful mountains and raise money for a charity created in memory of an extraordinary young man who lost his life on another peak.”
