Spain tourism chief gives date Irish tourists can return and it's sooner than expected

Spain is hoping to open up the country to international tourism as early as June.

The country's currently making its way out of lockdown and has already set its sights on a return to tourism.

Transport minister Jose Luis Abalos wants to allow holidaymakers come from the second half of June if the country is safe.

He told broadcaster TVE: "From late June, we'll start the tourism activity, I hope.

"We must make Spain an attractive country from the health point of view.

"As soon as we Spaniards can travel to other provinces, foreigners will be able to come to Spain.

"We can't allow foreigners to travel while the Spanish population is confined."

However while Spain may welcome Irish tourists, the Government here may not want people to leave the country.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said: "Spain declared a state of emergency (‘un estado de alarma’) on March 14. Although some easing of restrictions has begun, many measures remain in force.

"Current restrictions at Spain’s borders mean that only Spanish citizens or people who can prove that they have permanent residency in Spain will be allowed entry to Spain.

"Irish people who do not have permanent residence status in Spain (a green residency certificate) should not seek to enter Spain.  Significant restrictions on movement within the country are also in force and transport services are operating at considerably reduced levels."
