Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati has joined up with Spain's Euro 2025 squad in Switzerland after having treatment for viral meningitis.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed she was hospitalised in Madrid for "several days", which saw the 27-year-old miss the 3-1 friendly win over Japan in Leganes last week.

Bonmati, who has won the past two Ballon d'Ors, was discharged from hospital on Sunday.

She posted a further update on Sunday, June 29, saying: "Thanks to everyone for the messages I’ve received and to those who have helped me these past few days.

"Fortunately, everything is going well. I hope to be back soon. Thanks to everyone."

"There are no deadlines yet to know for how long she will be absent. Aitana, for us, is a very important player. We’ll wait for her as long as we can." said Spain coach Montse Tome.

The European Championship starts tomorrow, with many tipping World Cup winners Spain to win the tournament.

Barcelona's Bonmati has scored an impressive 30 goals in 78 games from midfield for her country and was a key member of the side that won the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Nations League.

According to the NHS, “most cases of viral meningitis improve on their own within seven to 10 days and can often be treated at home.”
