SPAIN has been hit by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake after it was devastated by flash flooding and heavy rain.
The earthquake hit the south of the country, including popular tourist hotspots such as Costa del Sol and Alicante, at around 7am on Monday morning.
In Almeria, an airport roof collapsed, with one airport worker telling local media: “We heard some noises one after the other and then a loud bang and a great cloud of dust appeared.
“It was a real scare for us. There were airport workers having their first coffee of the day but luckily no one was injured.”
It comes after 71 patients were forced to evacuate Penedès Regional Hospital near Barcelona and streets across Catalonia were turned to rivers following flash floods on Saturday.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated weather warnings for 25 provinces, with eight orange warnings.
AEMET has also warned tourists and locals to brace for severe storms in Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza, Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona, and Castellón.
