Spain boss issues David de Gea injury update ahead of Man United's clash with Liverpool

Spain's manager has issued an update on the fitness of Manchester United's David de Gea after the goalkeeper sustained an injury during a Euro 2020 qualifier with Sweden.

De Gea, who looked to have suffered a groin problem, was able to walk off the pitch and was replaced by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 28-year-old is now in doubt as to whether he will feature for the Red Devils this weekend as Liverpool travel to Old Trafford.

Speaking after La Rojo's 1-1 draw on Tuesday night, the national coach of Spain issued a brief update on De Gea.

Robert Moreno admitted the Premier League mainstay attempted to play on through the injury he sustained in the first half.

He told reporters : "He had pain in the abductor muscle but he received treatment at half-time and wanted to keep playing.

"He gave us his word, but in the end he couldn't continue."

Following the injury, Manchester United issued a statement on their official website urging that medical staff at the club had not yet assessed De Gea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to issue a further update on the No.1's fitness in his press conference this Friday.

If De Gea is unavailable, Sergio Romero would likely start in goal as Jurgen Klopp's team look to extend their unbeaten run.
