SpaceX Starship: Elon Musk unveils rocket to take 100 humans to other planets

Elon Musk has unveiled a new spaceship he claims will allow humans to inhabit other planets.

The SpaceX Starship, unveiled by the tech billionaire last night, is designed to land standing on its base, meaning it can be reused for multiple trips.

Standing at 387ft tall, the spacecraft can carry up to 100 people and could pave the way for regular, fast and cheap space travel in the future.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and a handful of artists are already booked on a trip around the Moon in the Starship in the 2020s.

The Starship is due to make its first test launch in one or two months and it is hoped the prototype will reach 65,000 feet before landing back on Earth.

Mr Musk, 48, said he hopes a prototype will reach Earth's orbit in about six months.

If the tests are successful, crews could start flying aboard it within the next year.

He spoke at an event that marked the 11th anniversary of the first successful orbital launch of SpaceX's first rocket, Falcon 1.

He said of the Starship: "This is the fastest path to a self-sustaining city on Mars."

Mr Musk also tweeted on Friday, ahead of the grand unveiling: "Starship will allow us to inhabit other worlds.

"To make life as we know it multiplanetary."
