SpaceX NASA Dragon capsule docks at International Space Station in 'milestone' journey

Two NASA astronauts on the first privately-funded voyage into space have successfully docked at the International Space Station.

Astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley were watched by millions on Saturday as they blasted off yesterday on a mission funded in partnership with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk's company SpaceX.

NASA has now confirmed that the astronauts have arrived safely after 19 hours travelling through space.

During their journey they were spotted above the UK shortly after 10pm, with many in Liverpool capturing the moment on camera.

The rocket's launch into orbit was captured on livestream, including views inside the astronauts' capsule.

Shortly after lift off, the spacecraft separated from the rocket and continued on its journey to the ISS.

A NASA livestream has captured the astronauts arriving at the station, which can be watched here.

British astronaut Tim Peake tweeted his congratulations to the astronauts after news of their arrival broke and added: "Another milestone in the history of human spaceflight."

The mission ushers in a new era of commercial space travel.

People across Liverpool shared pictures of the amazing sight.

Danny Murphy tweeted: "So cool seeing this in the sky, congratulations to everyone!"

And John Mullany said he had a "good view" of the spectacular sight from Liverpool.
