THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railway (SR) has registered a revenue of Rs 16.53 crore as earning from ticket-checking exercise and 3.10 lakh cases were registered from April 2021 to February 2022. The ticket-checking wing of the SR has intensified its efforts to curb ticketless and irregular travel of passengers, a release issued by the railways said.
During the current financial year, the SR has registered a revenue of Rs 83.99 crore as ticket-checking earnings, which is 22.9% higher compared to the same period of 2019-20 (pre-Covid).
A total of 16,32,944 penalty cases were registered in the zone during the said period from defaulters apprehended for ticketless travel, irregular tickets and unbooked luggage. Among the divisions, Chennai Division generated Rs 29.86 crore from 6.33 lakh cases during this period. Palakkad division (Rs 14.15 crore & 2.70 lakh cases), Salem division (Rs 9.61 crore & 1.69 lakh cases), Madurai division (Rs 7.79 crore & 1.37 lakh cases) and Tiruchchirappalli division (Rs 6.02 crore & 1.12 lakh cases) also generated considerable earnings from ticket checking during the above period.
In February 2022, the SR witnessed an increase of ticket-checking revenue of Rs 9.15 crore, an increase of 32.8% compared to February 2020 (pre-Covid).
The Southern Railway has appealed to all the railway passengers to travel with valid tickets and ensure booking of luggage in excess of marginal allowance.
