Southampton have confirmed the signing of the right-back Cédric Soares from Sporting Lisbon, for an initial fee believed to be £3.6m.
The 23-year-old Portugal international passed a medical and signed a four-year deal – a move which could clear the way for Nathaniel Clyne to join Liverpool.
Clyne, who has one year to run on his contract at St Mary’s, has been the subject of a failed £10m bid from Liverpool, with Southampton valuing him at £15m.
Soares, who played in Portugal’s 1-0 friendly win over Italy in Geneva on Tuesday, had also been a target for Stoke City.
