South West start-up digiLab named among UK’s best new tech firms

A South West tech start-up has been named among some of the best new tech companies in the UK.

Exeter-based digiLab is developing a machine learning platform for energy, water and aerospace industries. It has been designed to help data science engineers make digital twin models of a physical asset or process; such as an aircraft wing, nuclear fusion reactor or a water treatment process.

The AI company has fended off competition from hundreds of entrants to land a spot in industry expert Tech Nation’s ‘rising stars’ competition.

As the regional South West winner, digiLab will receive an opportunity to showcase its work to investors, accelerators, entrepreneurs and corporate leaders throughout the UK tech community. It will also be induced into Tech Nation's Growth Platform, which provides personalised support and access to a closed network for scale-up leaders.

More than 300 ‘rising stars’ winners and finalists have gone on to raise more than £260m in investment in the five years the contest has been running. Notable alumni include Bristol carbon accounting company Spherics, which was recently acquired by Sage.

Dr Anhadjeet Sandhu, digiLab co-founder and chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be the regional Rising Star winner for the South West and part of the Tech Nation network.

“We're shifting the paradigm in the South West by being the first four-day week deep tech scale-up, and we see digiLab making a positive contribution to jobs, the economy and sustainability both regionally and nationally, as well as improving gender balance in the tech industry. It's great to be recognised by Tech Nation for our commitment to our values!”

DigiLab was one of 10 winners named across the UK, with Welsh HR tech firm Stratigens and Northern Irish firms BioLedger and IncluTech also making the list.

This year’s ‘rising stars’ competition will be the final one, with Tech Nation set to close down after 10 years at the end of March, following the government’s decision to withdraw £12m in grant funding and award it to Barclays bank.
