South Side community events to help fine-tune Divvy’s planned citywide expansion

Divvy plans to be in all 50 wards by 2021. | Rahul Parikh/Sun-Times

City officials and the Divvy bike-sharing service plan a series of South Side events as part of Divvy’s citywide expansion.

The goal is to get feedback on where docking stations should be placed and also give residents a chance to try out Divvy’s new e-bikes.

Divvy, which is owned by Lyft, plans to add 10,500 of the e-bikes as it expands to all 50 wards in the city. By 2021, the goal is to have 16,500 bikes at 800 docking stations. They are in 38 of 50 wards now, and the South Side has been underserved.

The e-bikes can be pedaled, like the conventional Divvy bikes already on Chicago’s streets; but they also can get a boost from an electric motor.

There is no need to register to attend the free events, which will feature live music, complimentary food and soft drinks, and activities for kids.

Dates of the meetings are:

  • July 27: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Golden Gate Park, 13000 S. Eberhart Ave.
  • Aug. 3: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Big Marsh Park, 11559 S. Stony Island Ave.
