South American jungle snake found in Scots car park after escaping from owner

A South American snake that was found in a Fife car park has now been reunited with its owner after an appeal.

A shocked local in Leven spotted the Amazon tree boa in a residential car park and phoned animal rescue chiefs at the weekend.

The Scottish SPCA raced to the scene and took the animal, which is native to the jungles of South America, to their Edinburgh rehoming centre.

Charity bosses then launched an online appeal to find the owner of the slithery customer.

Spotting that the snake was his, he got in touch and proved it through showing pictures and giving accurate details.

Yesterday the pair were brought back together, with the man said to be very glad to have his pet back.

It is unclear how it escaped his home and made it to the car park but Diane Aitchison, the manager of the Edinburgh centre, said snakes could often find a way to escape.

She said: “The snake was found by a member of the public in their car park in Leven, Fife on May 23. Snakes are somewhat notorious for being escape artists and can find tiny spaces in their vivarium to squeeze through.

“We’re just delighted our Facebook appeal worked and we were able to reunite the snake with their very relieved owner.

“If anyone comes across an animal in distress they can call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999, which is open seven days a week from 7am until 9pm.”

The Daily Record has contacted the man who claims to be the snake's owner for comment.
