South Africa to embark on massive five-day trophy celebration after Rugby World Cup triumph

Rugby World Cup winners South Africa will embark on a five-day 'champions tour' parade when they arrive home from Japan later this week.

The Springboks team will arrive in South Africa on a number of different flights between Tuesday and Wednesday before immediately setting out on a parade through the country's major cities to parade the Webb Ellis trophy.

Parades will take place in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Soweto.

The Rugby World Cup squad will also parade the cup in Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth before concluding the tour in Cape Town next Monday.

Sport department's spokesperson Mickey Modisane said a meeting between the department, the Gauteng provincial government and Saru will take place today to finalise details around a "big welcome" for the team.

"We will be finalising all the details but one thing for sure [is that] the Springboks cannot arrive on a low-key... their victory is a big instrument for social cohesion and nation building," Modisane said.

Coach Rassie Erasmus, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and vice-captain Handre Pollard are among the first batch of the Springbok squad members who are due to arrive on Tuesday.

For Boks captain Kolisi, Sunday's stop in hometown Port Elizabeth will be particularly special.

The 28-year-old's early life in the township of Zwide was spent overcoming hardship and poverty, with his success on the field being hailed as one of the stories of the tournament in Japan.
