Soup recalled after label mix-up means it may be unsafe to eat

Health food brand Suma is recalling tins of soup as they may be dangerous to eat.

A packing mix-up has meant cans labelled as containing Suma Organic Spicy Lentil Soup may contain Suma Cheesy Pasta Pot, which means they contain gluten which is not mentioned on the label.

This means the product, which is mainly sold in independent shops and health stores, is a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

The affected batch is:

Suma Organic Spicy Lentil Soup: Batch code 0300/01-21 Best before October 2023.

A notice issued by Suma said: "Whilst it is obvious upon opening that the contents of the can are wrong and the product is not lentil soup, the incorrect product - Cheesy Pasta Pot - contains gluten in the pasta and gluten is not an ingredient mentioned on the label for the lentil soup. The product is still vegan."

The Food Standards Agency is advising people not to eat the product if they have coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten. If you've bought this product, return it to the store you bought it where you'll get a full refund.

If you've bought a product that's been recalled, you have the right to a refund thanks to the Consumer Rights Act. The retailer that sold it should offer you a full refund, even if it's been in your cupboard or freezer for a while. Even if you've already consumed the product or thrown it away, you are still entitled to a refund if you can provide proof of purchase such as a receipt, bank statement, or online order confirmation.
