Sorry, Josh Hutcherson doesn’t have to be a Swiftie

It isn’t surprising that fans get defensive of their favorite stars. Especially when it comes to the pop stars of today. But sometimes, it is not as deep as it is being made out to be. Like Josh Hutcherson not liking Taylor Swift.

The I Love LA star was doing an interview with co-star Jordan Firstman when a story about Hutcherson at the Eras Tour came up. He said that he went with his mother, who seemingly is a fan of Swift, and when asked if he was a Swiftie, Hutcherson responded “No.” The two go back and forth joking about, including Hutcherson doubling down and saying “Very much not.”

In the entire exchange, he is speaking for himself. He simply isn’t a fan. It is clear he went and did it for his mother. And fans have taken his spot in the VIP tent as some kind of diss to Taylor Swift. So now, fans of the pop singer are online angry that he didn’t say exactly what they wanted him to say.

Most of the responses from Swifties wanted him to say “No I’m not really a fan but I appreciate her” or something that still praised Swift in the process. To be fair, he even said “no shade” when talking about it and Firstman makes a joke off that. But ultimately the entire interaction doesn’t deserve the amount of attention it is getting online.

This is far from the first time something like this has happened. It has made enjoying Swift’s music hard. It isn’t an affront to what Taylor Swift has done if Josh Hutcherson isn’t a fan of her work. But that’s how the online conversation makes it seem and we need to stop doing this.

I get defending your faves but…come on

As is the way with online fans, when you say something against their faves, even if it isn’t necessarily negative, it ends up becoming an end of the world thing. Hutcherson was being honest and that’s fine. And that’s also something that fans who are this dedicated need to understand. Just because someone doesn’t like your favorite doesn’t mean they’re an enemy.

But the energy spent on someone simply not being a fan can and should be spent elsewhere. I am sure that Swift appreciates the support of her fans but this is not something hat should be weighing on you enough to post about it all the time.

So maybe just let Josh Hutcherson not be a Swiftie in peace?
