Sophie Turner just found out her celebrity power might be as potent as all the fictional characters she’s ever played in her career. Turner might not be able to control matters quite like Jean Grey or rule the House of Stark during a civil war in King’s Landing — but only Turner, in real life, can end an engagement with a simple wave of the hand from across the room.
Turner was doing her press rounds for her new movie Trust and stopped over at Late Night with Seth Meyers, one of the few remaining late night shows. The two were doing the usual banter, with Turner teasing some elements of the movie where she fittingly plays a Hollywood actor forced to hide in a cabin after being canceled for an unspecified reason.
The Game of Thrones alum then pivoted into her personal life, where she’s been having a unique experience adjusting to her fame, not just with us regular folks fascinated by her life and relationship with Joe Jonas. One story Turner felt she could share was from a certain after-party she attended with a friend a couple of years ago.
Apparently, Turner and her friends spotted a specific A-list actor at the other end of the room — this actor just so happened to be Turner’s best friend’s favorite. As expected, Turner’s friend begged her to make an introduction or at least say hi. But Turner, clearly a believer in not meeting your heroes, offered the next best thing: she simply waved from afar.
But Turner’s night of Hollywood mingling didn’t end there. The Joan star explained, “Later on, I see this girl looking at me and she’s a famous actress. And I go, ‘I have to go and tell her how much she means to me.’” Turner tried to slyly make her way toward the actress, who was making strong eye contact, to express her admiration for her work — only to be barked down and told, “Can you stop f–king flirting with my fiancé?” Apparently, the actress was also an A-lister who was dating the man Turner waved to — and Turner refused to name names because she thought revealing them might land her in trouble.
What she did share, however, was that the two A-listers’ engagement ended that very night. “I have no idea who this man is,” Turner added. “Turns out, they broke their engagement off that night because of my [wave]. I didn’t realize I held this power.” The crowd at Seth Meyers’ show burst into laughter and applause.
This story would have been even juicier with names — but it went viral anyway, and people online immediately started speculating with long-winded conspiracies about who the actors were. Still, it’s unlikely Turner was the real issue. It’s far more probable that she was just the last straw — the A-list actor must have been misbehaving for some time before the wave. Whether it was Channing Tatum or anyone else — we’ll never truly know. All we can do is guess and chuckle.
