Sega has announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will arrive digitally on December 4, bringing the mascot racer to Nintendo’s newest hardware just a few months after its original launch. A physical version will follow in early 2026, but players who already own the Switch release won’t need to buy the game all over again.
Instead, current Switch owners can purchase a $10 Upgrade Pack to access the Switch 2 version. That upgrade will be 50% off until December 10, making it a limited-time $4.99 offer. Newcomers who purchase the full Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will also receive the Werehog Pack DLC as a free early-purchase bonus until December 17. (via Gematsu)
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds originally launched on September 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Sega also confirmed the game has now sold over 1 million units, which makes the Switch 2 edition a likely attempt to keep momentum going as players migrate to next-generation Nintendo hardware.
What’s New In The Switch 2 Version Of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds?

Sega hasn’t shared full technical details yet, but the publisher says the Switch 2 version of CrossWorlds will deliver better performance, faster load times, and visual improvements that weren’t possible on the original Switch hardware. If the game follows the pattern set by recent Switch 2 releases, players can likely expect:
- Increased frame rates
- Higher-resolution visuals
- Improved stability in online play
- Better shadow and lighting effects
The upgrade pricing model is also notable. In a year when several publishers have either charged full price for next-gen ports or ignored upgrade paths completely, a $10 option — discounted to $4.99 at launch — puts CrossWorlds on the more consumer-friendly end of the spectrum. Then again, its foremost competitor, Mario Kart World, is one of Nintendo’s crown jewels. So offering such a wallet-friendly price could also be a cagey veteran move on Sega’s part. It’s not like they haven’t sent shots already.
One Million Sold And Still Growing
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has quietly become one of the most successful Sonic spin-offs in recent years. The combination of cross-platform multiplayer, a story-driven campaign, and callbacks to classic Sonic zones seems to have resonated with players, especially after post-launch patches addressed early balance complaints.
The Switch 2 release positions CrossWorlds to remain relevant well into 2026, especially with new players entering the platform. For longtime Sonic fans and kart-racing diehards, the cheaper upgrade path makes it easy to carry progress forward.
