Sonia Kinsella described as a "highly inspirational figure" and an "extraordinary woman"

Tributes have poured in following the death of Co Down mum-of-two Sonia Kinsella.

The Saul GAC coach passed away on Saturday after being diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago and seeing a return of the illness two years ago.

Ulster GAA paid tributes to their 2019 Translink Ulster GAA Coach of The Year on Monday describing her as a "highly inspirational figure."

They said: "The Officers and staff of Ulster GAA are saddened to hear of the passing of Sonia Kinsella, our 2019 Translink Ulster GAA Coach of The Year.

"Sonia received an unprecedented number of nominations and votes as part of the initiative, which clearly demonstrates the highly inspirational figure she has been to ‘her girls’, who she coached for many years, and to everyone in the Saul GAC community.

"To Philip, Aishling, Cathal and Sonia’s family circle, heartfelt sympathies are extended on behalf of Ulster GAA. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam."

Ulster Ladies said: "[We] are deeply saddened by the death of Sonia Kinsella. Sonia is a truly extraordinary woman who recently won the Volunteer of the Year Award.

"Sonia’s family and friends are in all our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time."

SDLP Councillor Gareth Sharvin said: "There are very few people in life that inspire, encourage and make such an impact, but one person did all that, Sonia Kinsella.

"Sonia was a lady who cared so much about everyone, especially her family husband Philly, children Aisling and Cathal, sister Tracey, brothers Frank and Barry, and the wider Holland and Kinsella families.

"Over the years I had the honour of getting to know Sonia and her infectious smile could brighten up the most darkest of days.

"When you called or bumped into her, she always asked how you were and that shows the kind hearted lady she was.

"She was at the heart of Saul GAC and always wanted everyone to do well.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Philly, Aisling, Cathal, Tracey, Frank, Barry and everyone who was lucky to meet such a fantastic person. You will be dearly missed Sonia.
