For many brides, a wedding is the biggest party they’ll ever throw themselves. It’s also ideally the most lasting commitment (other than parenthood) they’ll ever make.
In cultures the world over, the Big Day is rife with traditions and superstitions. Whether it’s jumping the broom, putting a penny in your left shoe, or wearing something old, new, borrowed, and blue, most weddings bring out people’s superstitious side.
But could something as seemingly innocuous as a dog chewing a pair of shoes signal that you should call your wedding off? That’s what people are saying about a woman whose pup gnawed on the Manolo Blahnik heels she bought to wear on her wedding day.
In mid-September, Petra Macias Medrano (@pmacias21) posted a TikTok showing the ruined Manolos.
“My wedding is in three weeks,” Medrano laments in an onscreen caption. The back of one of the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi Bride 50 white satin jewel buckle pumps, which retail for $1,395, is completely chewed up.
“My dog never tears things up. I don’t know why he did this. I only got to wear them one time for my engagement shoot,” Medrano adds in the caption.
A second ‘bad sign’
Now, people may have been inclined to simply chalk the ruined shoes up to bad luck. After all, the Hangisi Bride 50 Manolo Blahniks have a cow leather sole and kid leather lining. It’s easy to understand why these might tempt any dog.
But as it turns out, this is the second unfortunate event associated with Medrano’s nuptials. Late last spring, she lost her engagement ring. On June 15, she posted a plea asking if anyone in the Atlanta, Georgia area had found the gold band with a marquise cut diamond. The ring was never recovered.
The two combined have people convinced that she should call off the wedding.
As @desiree82 said, “This is God telling you something ain’t right.”
“These can’t be coincidences, especially not this close to the wedding,” @orchardsupremacy agreed.
Medrano’s post has 1.6 million views and over 800 comments, many from people urging her to cancel her wedding. All over a lost ring and ruined pair of shoes by the company made world famous by Sex and the City.
“Sometimes the universe sends signs….” @the_ladyrogue said.
“My witchy self says trust the dog,” @atraea_aubrey added.
Others piled on her fiancé, making assumptions about whether her dog likes him and even suggesting she check his phone.
A few did offer helpful advice, such as contacting Nordstrom for a replacement shoe or Manolo Blahnik for a repair.
Nordstrom does sell single shoes, so if you lose or ruin one, you may be able to get a replacement.
And Manolo Blahnik does indeed repair shoes. Though some damage may test the abilities of even the famed Italian shoe company’s cobblers.
Did she cancel the wedding over ruined Manolo Blahniks?
In a follow-up, Medrano says that her dog was right—though perhaps not in the way people thought.
“My fiancé was hiding something from me,” she says. “He replaced my ring.”
She then shows a new gold band with a marquise cut diamond, just like the one that she lost. This time, she notes that it’s a lab-grown diamond “because I don’t trust myself.”
Medrano also responds to the critics. “Some of the comments on my last video were really negative towards my fiancé,” she chides. “Anyone that knows my fiancé knows he’s the sweetest person ever.”
Medrano has since posted multiple videos showing her and her now-husband on their wedding day. It’s not clear what type of shoes she wore, and she didn’t respond to a direct message seeking comment.
But the joyful expressions on their faces suggest that their wedding day was everything they dreamed—Manolo Blahniks or not.
