Social welfare Ireland: Changes to payment date due to first ever February bank holiday

The social welfare payment date for February will see a major change due to the upcoming bank holiday in Ireland.

The first Monday of February, which falls on the 6th, marks St Brigid's Day which is a bank holiday. As a result, post offices and banks will be closed that day.

This means thousands of social welfare recipients will receive their payments earlier than usual next month. The payments will be made on Friday, February 3 instead of Monday, February 6.

Payments like child benefit, which is paid on the first Tuesday of the month, which in this case is February 7, will be paid as usual. This will be the first-ever bank holiday in February.

Last year it was announced that St Brigid's Day will mark the new annual public holiday from 2023. With its origins in the Celtic festival of Imbolc, St Brigid's Day was the festival of fertility and marked the beginning of spring in Ireland.
