Socceroos' first World Cup opponents score big win

The Socceroos' first opponents at the World Cup will head to North America full of confidence after their final warm-up match in Europe.

Turkey made a flying start to their preparations with a 4-0 win over North Macedonia at Fenerbahce's stadium in Istanbul.

Vincenzo Montella's side, who face Australia on June 14 (AEST) in their Group D opener, almost scored inside 11 seconds when Can Uzun hit the bar, before Orkun Kokcu put the home side ahead after just 62 seconds.

Uzun did get his first international goal in the 16th minute, before Deniz Gul and Baris Alper Yilmaz completed the win after the break.

Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro, meantime, has named his final 26-man squad, leaning heavily on overseas-based players, with only three ‌members of the squad drawn from Paraguay's domestic ‌league.

The Argentine manager, whose contract expires after the tournament, chose an experienced group on Monday (Tuesday AEST) led by 33-year-old captain Gustavo Gomez.

Gomez, the Palmeiras defender and long-time leader of ‌the national ‌team, headlines the squad that also includes Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Diego Gomez, Atlanta United's Miguel Almiron, Strasbourg forward Julio Enciso and Independiente striker Gabriel Avalos.

Paraguay begin their World Cup campaign on June 13 against the U‌S, one of the three host nations, then take on Turkey on June 20 and Australia on June 26 (all dates AEST).

Before travelling to the tournament, ‌La Albirroja are scheduled to face Nicaragua in a friendly on Friday.

Another one of the co-hosts, Canada, ran out 2-0 winners over first-time finalists Uzbekistan in Edmonton.

Second-half substitutes Jonathan Osorio and Jayden Nelson found the net, with Tani Oluwaseyi assisting both goals.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer fired 10-man Austria to a 1-0 win over Tunisia to wrap up their preparations on home soil.

Norway shrugged off the absence of Erling Haaland to beat Sweden 3-1 at home and claim their first win of the year and Colombia won by the same scoreline against Costa Rica.
