Soccer - Cluj clinch fourth Romanian title on final day of season

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - CFR Cluj won the Romanian league title in their first season under coach Dan Petrescu after a 1-0 win over former champions Viitorul Constanta on the final day of the campaign on Sunday.

Croatian midfielder Damjan Djokovic scored the only goal at Dr. Constantin Radulescu stadium two minutes before the break to help Cluj lift the trophy for a fourth time.

The Transylvanian club's nearest challengers, FCSB - formerly known as Steaua Bucharest - finished one point adrift after also winning their final match. They beat Astra Giurgiu 1-0.

Cluj will enter the Champions League's second qualifying round while FCSB and third-placed Universitatea Craiova will play in next season's Europa League qualifiers.

Cluj won three league titles, three national cups and two Supercups between 2008 and 2012. They also played in the Champions League group stage three times.

A few years ago the Railwaymen fell on hard times, owing huge sums to the state before going into administration in 2014.

Last year, however, local businessman Marian Bagacean agreed to purchase a majority stake in Cluj and hired former Chelsea right back Petrescu, who previously coached 11 teams in several countries.
