Soap stars with famous children from Denise Welch to Sally Dynevor and Patsy Palmer

Soap stars are often some of the most recognisable people in the country.

And for their children, this can be both a blessing and a curse - opening some doors for them but also possibly affecting their street cred in a detrimental way.

But while we all know and love the actors in Corrie, Emmerdale, EastEnders et al, plenty of them have children who are just as famous - if not more.

Some soap stars' kids inherit their parents' acting talents and go on to star in films and even conquer Hollywood.

Others become dark and mysterious rockers in chart-topping bands, or highly successful models.

Let's take a look at the soap stars with famous children - who you might not have even realised are related.

Kym Marsh and daughter Emilie Cunliffe

Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor on Coronation Street, has a daughter with similar talents to her famous mum.

She is a singer, which is how Kym first shot to fame in band HearSay.

Emilie released a single called Dancefloor with Damon Hess in 2016, which she co-wrote and performed in Ibiza when she was just 18.

She also took part in The Voice UK on BBC One in 2015, though she failed to get any of the coaches to stand up and choose her to mentor.

Emilie currently works for House of Evelyn as a makeup artist, and has even styled Hollywood star Lindsay Lohan for London Fashion Week.

She recently welcomed her first child, Teddy Archie David Hoszowskyj.

His middle name Archie was in tribute to Emilie's brother who died minutes after birth when he was born 18 weeks premature in 2009.

His father was Hollyoaks actor Jamie Lomas, Kym's ex-husband.

Proud grandmother Kym told the Manchester Evening News : "Emilie is doing great. She has been an absolute warrior.

"It feels like the royal baby, and we beat her as well."

She also told OK! the name was an emotional surprise.

"I didn't think they would [name him after Archie], and nor should they have felt they had to," said Kym.

"As far as I knew, he was going to be called Teddy David and I was chuffed with the name David being in there. When I found out his name, I burst into floods of tears.

"But now Archie lives on in Teddy's name. Having a baby boy in the house with Archie's name as part of his means the world to me."

Sally Dynevor and daughter Phoebe Dynevor

At first it shocked fans when they realised the leading lady who plays Daphne Bridgerton had a very famous mum (Instagram)

Coronation Street fans could not believe their eyes when they sat down to watch racy period drama Bridgerton and were met with a mini-me version of Sally Metcalfe actress Sally Dynevor.

Phoebe Dynevor, Sally's daughter, had landed the coveted role which saw her act alongside Rege-Jean Page and Adjoa Andoh.

And while the raunchy sex scenes made for an awkward viewing for Phoebe's parents, she said it was likely made easier because they are both in the TV industry.

The 26-year-old, who played aristocratic Daphne Bridgerton, says: "Luckily they are in the industry so I guess they probably understand more than most.

"I think they are really proud to see me work so hard on the show."

Sally, married to Emmerdale writer Tim Dynevor, explained at an awards panel: "Phoebe decided she wanted to act when she was 12 or 13.

"My mother-in-law said ‘You mustn’t dissuade her. Actors are the most wonderful people in the world and the most fun’.

"I thought ‘She’s absolutely right. And even if it’s very difficult, she’s going to have a great time’."

But when they watched the show together, Phoebe and Sally made sure they skipped all of the (many) intimate scenes.

Speaking to BBC Radio 2, Phoebe said: "I had to sit there and fast forward on high alert with the remote control. We managed it just about."

It was not Phoebe's first acting role, either.

She also had roles on Waterloo Road, the BBC’s The Musketeers, and as Clare in US comedy drama Younger – made by Sex and the City creator Darren Starr and co-starring Hilary Duff.

Denise Welch and son Matty Healy

Fans of indie band The 1975 could be forgiven for not immediately noticing the connection moody lead singer Matty Healy has to Loose Women panelist Denise Welch.

Denise has starred on Coronation Street, Waterloo Road, and currently in Hollyoaks, where she plays Trish Minniver.

Meanwhile, Matty's band have had two number one albums and sold records all over the world.

One of the 1975's songs, She Lays Down, is about his mum's cocaine addiction and mental health battle.

It contains personal lyrics such as: “She chose cocaine / But it couldn’t fix her brain.”

Speaking to the Mirror, Denise said: "That song is about my depression.

"It’s a beautiful song. I didn’t know he was going to write it. He wanted it to be completed before I heard.

"It’s tough for me to listen to because it’s so heartfelt.”

She said the song’s message has helped many others who are struggling with mental illness.

"I’ve had so many messages on social media about how that has been the soundtrack to people’s lives," she added.

"It’s helped a lot of people. He takes his responsibility as a songwriter incredibly seriously, and for that I’m very proud.

"He knows the effect he has on other people. I’m incredibly proud of him."

The lyrics also describe how Denise felt suicidal during a plane journey with her family and hoped the plane would crash, with Matty singing: “She prayed that we fell from the sky / Simply to immediate the pain."

Denise, who shares Matty with ex-husband Tim Healy, had also revealed that harrowing story on Loose Women.

"I can't believe I had those thoughts," she admitted.

She also said on Loose Women she knows ditching the booze and going sober helped Matty achieve the stardom he was destined for.

"[Matt] says, ‘Mum, if you hadn’t been a bit rock ‘n roll I wouldn’t be who I am now'," she said.

"But Matthew’s success wouldn’t have happened if I was still drinking, because of the worry and the anxiety."

Matty too would beat his own addiction demons.

He told the Rolling Stone he was smoking heroin and taking benzodiazepines in 2017, before he headed to rehab in Barbados.

"I got through it. I said, ‘I’ve got more important things in my life'," he explained.

"There’s not many junkies that are lucky enough to say that."

Shane Richie and son Jake Roche

Shane Richie's second-eldest son Jake Roche, whose mother is Coleen Nolan, previously featured in Emmerdale back in 2010.

Jake, 28, landed a TV role as Isaac Nuttall, but admitted his famous dad, who played Alfie Moon in rival soap EastEnders, did not help him get the part.

He said: "When I was auditioning they didn’t know who my parents were and I’d also auditioned twice before, so they obviously didn’t care about that or they wouldn’t have turned me down."

Now, Jake is the lead singer of band Push Baby (previously called Rixton) who had a number one with their hit song Me and My Broken Heart.

He also appeared as Matt in the BBC musical film Rules of Love in 2010, and appeared briefly in drama Scott & Bailey in 2012.

Jake was in a relationship with Jesy Nelson from 2014-15, breaking up just months after getting engaged.

Patsy Palmer and sons Charley and Fenton

Patsy Palmer has four children – Charley Palmer Rothwell, Emilia, Fenton and Bertie Merkell (Instagram)

Former EastEnders star Patsy Palmer's eldest son Charley Palmer Rothwell has already made it big in America.

The actor, 28, is famous for making an appearance in the 2017 film Dunkirk, as well as blockbuster Legend alongside famous UK actor Tom Hardy.

Charley also starred in BBC drama Our Girl - which features Michelle Keegan - as Baz.

Patsy, who played the role of Bianca Jackson on EastEnders, also has two other children who are in the showbiz world.

Her son Fenton Merkell, 20, is making it big time as a model, signed to Select Management in Los Angeles.

Fenton's sister Emilia, 18, is also a successful model.

Danny Dyer and daughter Dani Dyer

Danny Dyer has played Mick Carter on EastEnders since 2013, after starring in the 1999 film Human Traffic and 2004’s The Football Factory.

But his daughter, 25-year-old Dani, has found fame through reality TV, winning Love Island in 2018.

She recently welcomed her first child, Santiago, but is still making time to host a podcast with her dad, Sorted With The Dyers.

Dad-of-three Danny, who himself became a father at 18, said: “I was a baby when I had Dani – I couldn’t even shave.

“So me and my eldest daughter have grown up together. We are very close and she can tell me anything.”

While Dani was on Love Island, Danny shared a throwback photo of him cuddling her on his Instagram page.

He wrote: "Me and the Wife have come to accept the fact that we was put on the planet to reproduce Love Islanders."

On June 24, just under three weeks in, he tweeted about how much he missed his "baby girl".

Trudie Goodwin and daughter Elly Jackson

Former Emmerdale and The Bill star Trudie Goodwin spent more than two decades as Sergeant June Ackland and became a household name - but she's not the only famous face in her family

Trudie, 63, has a famous pop-star daughter - La Roux's lead singer Elly Jackson.

But while Trudie preferred to be the star of the small-screen as June Ackland from 1984 until 2007 in The Bill - Elly has gone on to music glory for the Mercury Prize, the Brits and Ivor Novello amongst others.

The actress, who also played Georgia Sharma in Emmerdale, says her daughter was exposed to music from a young age as her actor husband Kit Jackson is also heavily into the scene.

The couple's elder daughter Jessica is also in the music industry and Trudie says she is immensely proud of their achievements.

She told the Daily Record : "It’s very strange. She’s a lot more famous than I am because she is known worldwide.

"We had no expectations of them performing. But both of my daughters are musicians and songwriters.

"Music has always been a massive part of their life, not through me but through my husband. He is an actor but also an extremely good musician."

The actress, who is still instantly recognisable from her 24-year stint in The Bill, says she can credit her role for offering a stable home life as a working-mum which in the acting world can be hard to find.

She told the Express : "It was fantastic. I don’t regret a minute. It was a wonderful job with great people and those of us who were in right from the beginning are all still huge friends.

"When my youngest daughter was in sixth form, she said she didn’t want to go to university. I thought, ‘That means I don’t have to pay.’

"During the time, it was fantastic and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I have been very lucky. I have been able to keep working and have a family and an awful lot of actors find that difficult to do."
